This article aims to share information on the various types of mining pumps.

Mining operations require dewatering and safe disposal of potentially contaminated water. Proper mine dewatering is a critical component to every successful mining operation, regardless of the type of mining that is being done,  generally, mining dewatering requires high head, i.e., 100 to 120 meters with solid handling size of 40 to 60 mm.

Mining pumps refer to the pumps that are required for dewatering as a part of the mining process. Mining pumps are bifurcated on the basis of fluid transfer and application needs. Mining pumps work for rough sludge dewatering, mineral processing, slurry transfer, reagent (acid and chemical) dosing, water supply, and boosting waste water management and tailing transfer.

Let’s have a look at various mining pump options available.

  • Slurry Pumps– These pumps are planned for liquids with a combination of solid particles. The design and and construction of the pump can be changed to adjust to various kinds of slurry that differ in the concentration of solids, size of solid particles, the shape of solid particles, and composition of the solution. The slurry pumps are more sturdy as compared to liquid pumps because of sacrificial material used and replaceable wear parts to withstand wear due to corrosion. Centrifugal pumps, as well as positive displacement pumps, can be used for slurry.

  • Self-Priming pumps– Self-priming pumps move debris with ease and ensure hassle-free operation. These pumps provide strong suction of mud and rock and draw liquid, solids, and other material from construction sites, and transfers everything to the designated area.

  • Auto-Priming pumps– auto-priming pumps offer simple, reliable operation and easy maintenance. Auto priming pumps are beneficial as they can run dry for an extended period of time as compared to other conventional pumps. These pumps are suitable for nearly all dewatering applications, especially in mining, straight dewatering, and sewer by-pass dewatering.
  • Gravel pumps– these pumps are most commonly used to move sand to a far distance. Gravel pumps can also be classified as sand pumps or slurry pumps. These pumps have multi-purpose but most common being in mining, metallurgy, coal washing, power plants, sewage water treatment, dredging, and chemical and petroleum industries.
  • Dredge pumps– Dredging is the process of transport of underwater particles from one place to another, mainly sand, gravel or rocks. This process is most commonly used for the reclamation of land, desilting, flood prevention, creation of new ports or expansion of existing ports, and this is possible only with the help of dredging pumps.
     
  • Submersible slurry pumps– these pumps have a sealed motor attached to the pump body. The entire device is submerged into the fluid that is to be pumped and then the liquid is pushed out the surface. These pumps are more efficient as compared to jet pumps.
     
  • Vertical slurry pumps– These pumps are also known as cantilever pumps. These pumps use a shaft that allows the liquid to fall within the pit as the bearings are external to the pit.
     
  • Horizontal pumps– These pumps include a minimum of two otherwise more impellers. Every stage is fundamentally a divide pump. On a single shaft minimum 8 or additional stages can be arranged. All kinds of pumps have been providing as well as servicing this type of centrifugal pump.


  • Water pumps– Water pumps are ordinary instruments that pushes coolant through the engine block and the radiator to cool down the heat that the
    engine produces. These pumps use the centrifugal force and removes the coolant that is trapped between the impeller blades. A suction (vacuum) is created in the center area of the pump housing. Coolant is drawn from the radiator via the lower radiator hose into the water pump. The main working of water pumps thus involves transferring coolant to the engine to remove the heat and then throwing the coolant to the outside air.
    The water pumps can be divided into single-stage pump, two-stage pump and multi-stage pumps.
     
  • Centrifugal pumps– The centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by turning rotational kinetic energy into the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow, and the rotational kinetic energy generally comes from an engine or the electric motor.
    Centrifugal pumps are preferable for their high flow rate capabilities, abrasive solution compatibility, mixing potential, as well as their relatively simple engineering.

The choice of pump should be made depending upon the application factors and for this it is essential to have proper guidance and knowledge with regard to the same.
