In a layman’s language, dewatering means the removal of water. This process is used in various industries but most commonly in construction and waste management where the water is separated from solid materials using various kinds of pumps. So what happens is that in construction sites, the water is pumped out to lower the ground level of water to ease excavation below natural ground level.

The various types of pumps that can be used for this purpose are submersible pumps, self-priming pumps, borehole pumps, etc., but the pump choice always depends on the working conditions.

Some of the dewatering techniques are listed below:-

  1. WELLPOINT– this method requires the use of submersible pumps. Here the submersible pumps are positioned in the well shaft and with the help of it the wells are drilled out at the excavation area. The connection between the pump and the groundwater is made using a header pipe that permits the pumps to pull up the water and discharge it.
  2. DEEPWELLS– this method is similar to that of wellpoint and uses submersible pumps except that here one or several individual wells are drilled. This technique is best suitable where large volumes of water is to be pumped out i.e., deep excavations.
  3. BYPASS DEWATERING– when sewer pipes require upkeep, then using the dewatering pumps the sewage waste is drained out around the damaged section. This technique is most commonly used for irrigation and construction purposes.
  4. FLOOD CONTROL– it refers to all the methods used to control the ill effects of flooding from storms or heavy rainfall. Be it any work, the site managers need to be prepared for flooding by keeping pumps that can pass large amounts of water against low pressure nearby. A similar method is used to elevate water levels in channels when roads and houses get flooded. This is also beneficial for municipalities for good flood protection.
  5. TUNNELING DEWATERING– tunnel construction is one of the most complex worksites. A considerable amount of water is required to be removed to stabilise the ground. Such projects require many dewatering pumps on-site, ranging from small submersible pumps to very large units for large volume dewatering applications.

Now that we have sufficient knowledge about the various methods of dewatering, it is important to know about the pumps that are good for dewatering.

  • Openwell Submersible pumps– The main advantage of these pumps is that the pump is placed at the same level as that of water and also such pumps require less operating space.

  • End-suction pump– Such pumps are placed upon the surface. Thus, a long suction pipe is required to be lowered down in the water.

  • Self priming pumps– These pumps provide automatic self-priming. It means that they can manage air, water, or both without the help of any separate priming system.

  • Auto priming pumps– Such pumps simplify the normal pump startup process since it uses a single start sequence irrespective of the priming status.

  • Non- clog pumps– Such pumps are used mainly where high solids are to be transported. For example, in mining, sewage etc.
  • Cutter pumps– Such pumps are designed to handle tougher solids that ordinary sewage pumps cannot handle. It provides clog free operation by squashing those solids.

For all surface pumps, the prime mover can be an engine as well as a motor which makes it feasible for pumps to operate without electricity, even in flood-affected areas.

Based on your unique needs and requirements, our team at Udyog Engineering guides you on the pump you should choose so that you get the best of your investment and your project needs are met to your satisfaction.
